Heading into the afternoon undefeated in our last ten away games, Wanderers journeyed – slowly – to 21st-placedEnfield Town, eager to bounce back after last week’s draw against Farnborough. Kick-off was moved to 3:45 PM due to the players’ coach arriving later than expected.

Eventually, the hosts got the game underway, but both teams endured a slightly sluggish opening ten minutes. Despite Wanderers enjoying most of the early possession, Enfield were poised to counterattack, with Ollie Knight ready to exploit any opportunities.

Our early momentum largely came through Josh Brooking – making his first start since our visit to Weymouth in January. His efforts were rewarded when a determined run down the right wing won Wanderers a penalty fifteen minutes in.

Rob Milsom stepped up to the spot, but his effort was met by Joe Wright, who made a good save down to his left. Wanderers were clearly eager to put the hosts under pressure, but Enfield’s 4-4-2 formation proved both stubborn and resolute in the early stages.

Wanderers soon had another big chance. Jimmy Muitt played a delightful cross into Jason Prior, whose volleyed effort rattled the crossbar 25 minutes in. These were promising signs for Wanderers, but Town had spells of their own—normally aiming for their towering number nine, Anointed Chukwu, who posed a constant aerial threat.

It would perhaps be an understatement to say that Wanderers were dominant for the remainder of the half. We enjoyed long spells of possession and plenty of half-chances.

The hosts’ defence was finally breached moments before half-time. Jordan Norville-Williams whipped a delightful cross into a dangerous area, met by a slightly miscued header from Charlie Carter. Fortunately for Wanderers, Jason Prior arrived with impeccable timing and glanced the ball into the bottom left corner. 42’ 0-1

Half-time: 0-1

Our boys were eager to double their advantage after the break. A great team move culminated in Muitt shooting from a tight angle and forcing an excellent save from Wright. Moments later, he produced an even better stop to deny Carter’s header from Milsom’s corner, leaping across goal to tip the effort onto the crossbar.

The hosts then had their first shot on target. Sam Youngs found space on the edge of the box and released a strike, but Foulkes comfortably gathered.

By the hour mark, Town had grown into the game. Long goal kicks from Wright caused a few issues for Wanderers’ defence, with this direct approach allowing Youngs, Ollie Knight, and Billy Leonard to deliver probing crosses. It was a complete role reversal—our boys struggled to get a foothold in possession.

This pressure eventually gave the hosts a lifeline, as Enfield were awarded a penalty at the same end where Milsom had missed in the first half.

Youngs chose to continue the afternoon’s trend with an audacious chip—which barely got off the ground and trickledtowards the unmoved Foulkes.

A huge let-off for Wanderers.

The missed penalty stifled Enfield’s momentum. In the following five minutes, Muitt fired a volley into the crossbar, and substitute Jack Young tried his luck from the edge of the box, forcing another phenomenal save from Wright.

The next ten minutes flew by, with the hosts continuing to enjoy possession and creating a series of half-chances. Our boys looked a real threat on the counterattack, but with time on their side, they were happy to see the game out—all to the beat of the Wanderers fans’ drum.

We were gifted an opportunity to seal the win moments before injury time. Wright—while in possession on the right side of his box—played a poor clearance straight to our boys in orange. Carter made no mistake, firing the ball into an empty net, securing all three points for Wanderers. 88’ 0-2

It wasn’t our finest performance, and Enfield certainly made it tricky at times, but we head back to Surrey victorious.

Full-time: 0-2
