Coming off the back of Saturday’s defeat against Hemel Hempstead, we made amends with a convincing 4-1 victory against Tonbridge Angels at Meadowbank.

We gained the victory with two goals from Alfie Rutherford, one from Charlie Carter and one from Brennan Camp.

Following Saturday’s defeat we only made two changes despite such a quick turnaround since the previous fixture, however, despite this, we showed a fluidity in the opening exchanges, with continuity in the side.

This fluidity was rewarded with a second goal before the ten-minute mark, after captain Charlie Carter brought down a lofted ball into the area, before side footing the ball past the opposition goalkeeper.

After a brief stoppage in play, Charlie Carter came close to notching his second goal of the match, heading wide from a Frank Vincent free kick, before Jason Prior’s goal bound shot was blocked.

With an average squad age of 24, the visitors were quick to remind us that they had a youthful exuberance and energy in their side.

After concise build-up play, full-back Bradley Williams drove in a ferocious cross that had Harrison Foulkes scrambling to ensure it went wide as it flew goal bound.

Wanderers remained a constant threat, particularly on set-pieces, through talisman Jason Prior, who headed wide halfway through the first half, and through wide man Frank Vincent, whose goal bound free kick was gathered soon after.

Tonbridge winger Brody Peart has featured within the youth ranks at Brighton, however, for most of the first half, he was unable to trouble the Wanderers’ defence, with his most notable effort of the match just before the half time whistle flying over the bar.

Our early pressure in the second half paid dividends, as Alfie Rutherford doubled his tally for the afternoon, looping a header past the goalkeeper, after a Harrison Foulkes goal kick was flicked on into his path.

Almost immediately, the extended advantage was bought back to two goals, however, as Tonbridge substitute drilled the ball low past Harrison Foulkes, denying us a clean sheet.

Wanderers’ winger Dennon Lewis almost added to the lead in the 72nd minute, capitalising on a defensive mix-up, however his poked effort was saved by the legs of Jacob Adams.

The fourth goal did arrive from the resulting corner, though, as Brennan Camp nodded home into an empty net from close range.

The game did remain an open affair following the goal, with chances at both ends.

Tonbridge striker Edward Simon came close to reducing the deficit, before young Josh Hebert headed wide from a wicked ball from Alfie Rutherford, and side footed the ball wide from close range after another wicked ball in, in the last action of the game.

The next encounter for us is another away trip this Saturday, as we make the trip to face Bath City FC.
