A firecracker start helped nudge us in favour of a 2-1 victory against Enfield Town on Tuesday night. An early goal from hot-shot Jose Marquez and second-half Dennon Lewis elation ultimately earned us all three points on home soil, despite a late scare.
The triumph takes us to four wins on the spin in the National League South, pushing us up to fifth in the league table, with more fixtures coming thick and fast.
Ahead of this game, manager Marc White made no changes to the lineup that emerged victorious against Salisbury over the weekend. However, a first-half knock to forward Alfie Rutherford forced us into an early alteration.
Loanee Jose Marquez couldn’t have dreamt of a better start to Wanderers life after netting a debut goal against Salisbury. That certainly gave the Raging Bull an appetite for goals, as he remarkably found the net for us in the first 58 seconds at Meadowbank. Dennon Lewis’ swirling cross into the box reached an unmarked Marquez prior to the minute mark, whose cushioned header crept past Rhys Forster to warrant us an early lead. 1-0
The Forest Green loanee almost secured a brace just eight minutes later, with another free header in front of Enfield’s net. However, the chance went begging, as his nod goalwards looped over the crossbar.
It was all go in the opening stages; the visitors tried their luck from range through Ollie Knight on 11 minutes. However, Avan Jones squandered the rebound from Harrison Foulkes’ parry.
Alfie Rutherford had a chance to extend our advantage with 10 minutes until the interval. Although, his patience to let fly saw the Enfield defence clean up all danger and knock the forward down in distress, which resulted in an early attacking change from Marc White.
Despite continuous efforts from both sides, our early opener was the only margin to alter the scoreline heading into half-time.
Half-Time: Dorking Wanderers 1-0 Enfield Town
The second-half didn’t quite get off the blocks as swiftly as the first one did. However, we remained in pursuit of a second goal through an abundance of threatening corners and an inviting Jason Prior half-volley, which forced a challenging save from Forster.
Our persistent crosses into the Enfield penalty area were going to payout at some point and they did just that in the 71st minute. Jimmy Muitt hurled a wide cross towards the back post, which bounced into Dennon Lewis’ path for him to rifle into the roof of the net. 2-0
This goal reignited the game again, with Enfield’s Avan Jones attempting to reduce the arrears just moments later. The ball found him outside the box for him to slash past Foulkes’ left post.
Substitute James McShane then thought he’d killed all doubt up the other end, as his unorthodox volley rustled the post to hit the away net once more. However, the linesman’s flag was raised to deny the midfielder’s first league goal of the season.
The game then became far from dead; the visitors pulled one back on 78 minutes with an emphatic set-piece from Oliver Davis. The late arrival wrapped his strike around our wall and into the bottom-right corner. 2-1
Despite a jittery final 15 minutes, we managed to see out the game to claim all three points and a fourth consecutive league win.
Full-Time: Dorking Wanderers 2-1 Enfield Town
We now turn towards our away trip to Farnborough on Saturday, in search for a fifth consecutive win.
