“Obviously we’re still disappointed from last week, largely because despite Eastbourne being in the game for certain periods, they only forced one save out of Harrison across the 90. We were just disappointed that we didn’t get that second goal when it mattered, we also didn’t have changes on the bench in key areas, which was frustrating.”

Of course we’re also disappointed to lose a penalty shootout, and as much as I completely appreciate and share the supporters’ frustrations with Jason’s penalty, and think they have every right to be, Eastbourne’s goalkeeper did go very early, going the way Jason usually goes [from a penalty]. Jason two or three times in his career with us has changed his mind last minute when the keeper has gone early and put it down the middle, so it’s important to remember that these lads never want to make a mistake, and Jason accepts he made a mistake and should’ve just put his foot through the ball.”

So, we’re obviously frustrated, but we are still rebuilding. I think our last few games have displayed how much we’re missing the boys in central areas that know how we play. That’s obviously no disrespect to Morgan, Jack and Will coming in, but we do play a precise brand of football, and it takes time to bed these new players into that philosophy. At one point in our last league game against Slough, there were seven players on the pitch who hadn’t spent pre-season with the club. At the moment that is the biggest challenge – getting boys back and integrating the new boys.

Looking back, we had three or four games in quick succession where we scored 12 goals, and it was no coincidence that we had a lot more of those Wanderers lads out there that know how we play. Having those players out there is the difference between having 70% possession and creating no chances, and having 70% possession and scoring 12 goals.

So that [the rebuild] is something we are mindful of, Rome wasn’t built in a day it will take a while to get these new boys up to where we want to be – we all need to be patient.

We’ve had a good week training, we’re working hard. We are however going to be light on the ground again [going into Enfield], we’re not expecting Rob Milsom to return, Josh Brooking is suspended for the first of two games. Niall McManus’ progress has been slower than expected, which is frustrating. Josh Taylor and Luke Moore are making progress, albeit slowly, as well as Rhys Murphy.

But we are going to see the long awaited return of James McShane back into the matchday squad, one of our longest serving players and a real fan favourite. It’s going to be a long comeback for Macca to get fully up to speed, but we’ve taken the decision to integrate him through the use of our fifth sub, rather than putting him out on loan. We can’t wait to see him back in Wanderers colours, he’s worked immensely hard to get back in front of the fans and play, he’s really excited.

So obviously a positive there [the return of Macca], but the reality is, going into tomorrow’s game against Enfield, that every opponent in this division is tough. They [Enfield] had a poor start but have picked up a bit of form. We are very much rebuilding, and are definitely way shorter than we’d like to be, especially in central areas, but I’m sure the lads will give a great account.

We’re hoping for a bumper crowd to welcome back Macca!”
