After our first loss of pre-season at home against Aldershot last Saturday, the boys ended preparations for the season with an entertaining 2-2 draw away at Farnham Town at the Memorial Ground.
The hosts have continued where they left off with their title winning campaign last season, scoring 26 goals in 6 pre-season matches before today’s game. However, we were able to replicate the quick start against Aldershot, as Charlie Carter nipped in to win the ball off the defence before squaring to Alfie Rutherford who laid the ball off for Josh Taylor who saw his shot fly just over the bar.
This was quickly preceded by the game’s opener for us, as a quick counter attack saw Frank Vincent drill the ball across the box for Brennan Camp to clinically apply the finishing touch.
Farnham only lost two matches last season, and their powers of recovery showed as the equaliser for the home side quickly followed in the 7th minute of the game. Ogo Obi capitalised on a defensive mix up and the ball trickled through to former Wanderer, Bobby-Joe Taylor, and he coolly rounded Harrison to slot into an empty net.
After conceding a disappointing goal, we quickly created a flurry of chances as a combination of good goalkeeping and defending ensured efforts from Charlie Carter and Norville-Williams did not find the back of the net.
We continued to provide a threat in the early stages and Brennan Camp was looking to add his goal tally, however he saw his header fly wide in the 20th minute.
After a brief lull in the game, we came close from two corners in a row as Charlie Carter had an effort blocked and Brennan Camp diverted wide from close range, and Dennon Lewis was met with a fine save from home goalkeeper Zaki Oualah, who diverted Lewis’ one-on-one effort wide for a corner. The flurry of chances continued for the boys as Alfie Rutherford initiated a give and go in the box before driving the ball into the side netting.
At the start of the second half, Oualah was on top form once more, denying a close-range effort as well as a follow up from Charlie Carter. This, however, was followed up by a clinical counter-attack from the hosts whereby Sam Evans slotted past Foulkes to put the home side ahead.
We continued to threaten the home side’s goal following their second goal of the game as Vincent saw his low effort dribble agonisingly wide and Jason Prior’s volley from the centre of the box was turned away by the defender.
Prior soon equalised however, after a ball was played through to him by Jimmy Muitt, smashing the ball past Oualah into the bottom right corner. Both sides pushed for a winner with the best chance falling to Darryl Sanders poking the ball just over the bar.
The boys will be hoping to take the positives from the match into their first League encounter of the season away against Chippenham on the 9th August. You can join the team on the road by securing your seat on our official supporters coach via the link below, for only £25 return.
