Originally scheduled to be the late kick off on BT Sport four weeks ago to the day, the game was postponed due to both sides progression to the 5th round of the FA Trophy.

Wanderers will be hoping to make it a hat-trick of midweek home wins following on from the victories over Torquay United back in February and Barnet earlier this month, and will come into the game with a confidence boost after an impressive 3-1 victory over Maidenhead United at Meadowbank on Saturday afternoon. Jason Prior netted his first goals on home soil since returning to Wanderers last month, burying a header in each half before Josh Taylor added another headed finish just before the hour mark, the rentention of a clean sheet prevented ten minutes from time as Charlee Adams stuck away a penalty kick after Bruno Andrade had been brought down inside the box. Post-match Marc White praised his side for a ‘complete team performance’, and the manager will no doubt be looking for more of the same from his players on Tuesday night in front what it expected to be a bumper crowd at Meadowbank.

 

Team News

With no new injury concerns following the weekend, Marc White will have similar selection dilemmas to consider for Tuesday’s game, which is likely to come around too soon for Niall McManus, Matt Briggs, Nicky Wheeler and Alfie Egan to be involved.

Ed Harris is available for selection and will be pushing for a start, as will Barry Fuller and Aaron Kuhl who both came on during the second half of Saturday’s match.

Opposition Focus: The Shrimpers

Southend United will be arriving at Meadowbank on Tuesday looking to turn around a difficult run of form which has seen them win just 1 game in the last 8 league fixtures. A run of 4 straight league wins from the start of February had kept The Shrimpers right in the promotion mix, but subsequent results has seen them drop down to 12th place in the league table, 9 points away from the final play-off spot. It must be noted that Kevin Maher’s side have been beaten by 5 of the current top 7 sides in the National League table within this recent run, including the runaway top two Wrexham and Notts County. The Shrimpers last victory came on the road at Torquay United in late February, Callum Powell and Cavaghn Miley scoring the goals in a 1-2 win, Miley netting the winner into stoppage time. A Regan Linney penalty just over ten minutes from time was enough for Altrincham to defeat Southend 1-0 this past Saturday afternoon at The J Davidson Stadium. Outside of the division’s top two and play-off chasing Boreham Wood, The Shrimpers have the next best defensive record in the league with 39 goals conceded so far this term. Up the other end, striker Callum Powell and midfielder Jack Bridge are the joint top scorers for the club so far this campaign with 8 goals each. Wing-back Gus Scott-Morris may be familiar to Wanderers fans having impressed for Hemel Hempstead in the National League South encounters of recent season’s, and the right-sided player has been rewarded for consistent form this term with a recent call up to the England C squad, starting in the 1-0 win against Wales C a week ago. Key midfielder’s Harry Taylor and Wesley Fonguck both joined The Shrimpers from Barnet last summer, Fonguck a previous England C international himself having been selected in 2018 and 2019.

Earlier This Season…

In the reverse fixture at Roots Hall back in November, the home side ran out comfortable winners with a 2-0 win, extending an impressive unbeaten run to 11 games in the process. Jack Bridge’s early penalty got The Shrimpers off to an ideal start, defender Shaun Hobson then heading home a corner ball just past the half-hour mark to double the lead, and that’s how it remained.

Weekend Round Up…

Frustrating Double Header For The DWFC Women…

Hackney Woman were the visitors to Meadowbank on Sunday afternoon for back-to-back games as the DWFC Women looked to catch up on league fixtures following their recent cup progress. Both matches were scheduled at 30 minutes per half, the first contest ending with a 1-3 win to the visiting side, striker Charlotte Keenan cancelling out Hackney’s early opener just before half-time for Wanderers, but the London based side got back in front via the penalty spot before killing the game off with a third goal just five minutes from time. The second game ended all square at 0-0, the results leaving Lou Cooper’s side still in 3rd in the league standings, 7 points behind leaders Clapton Community but with 5 games in hand.

Next up in the league, it’s ‘El Clasimole’! The DWFC Women will make the short trip over to Fetcham Grove this Sunday afternoon to face Leatherhead in a 2pm kick off.

B Team Make It 5 Unbeaten In All Comps…

Coming into Saturday’s game off the back of four straight wins, Ruben Gaspar’s B team were held to a 0-0 draw away at Wick FC on Saturday afternoon at Crabtree Park. The result keeps Wanderers in 2nd place in the table, 5 points behind Shoreham, but the Sussex side do have 2 games in hand.

Back on home soil next Saturday, the B team host Hailsham Town in a 3pm kick off at Meadowbank, one of just three league games now left this campaign.
