Dorking Wanderers FC Women currently compete in the London & South East Premier Division (Tier 5 of the Women’s football pyramid). We also play within the Women’s FA Cup and League Cup competitions.
Only formed in 2020, we have quickly established ourselves as a competitive force to be reckoned with in the local area.
After achieving promotion in our first year together, we went on to compete in the L&SE Division One South (Tier 6) in the 21/22 season. Whilst we narrowly missed out on making it back-to-back promotions, we still finished the year with silverware after winning the Capital Cup, defeating Clapton Community 1-0 in the final hosted at Meadowbank Stadium.
The following season, we managed to go one better. A 7 game winning run in the final stretch of the season saw us clinch the L&SE Regional Division One South title, earning promotion to the Premier Division. It would ultimately be a memorable double-winning campaign as well, with a successful defence of our Capital Cup Trophy after defeating Brentford 3-1 at Bedfont Sports FC.
Our inaugural season competing at Tier 5 of the Women’s pyramid last term saw us consolidate our place in the league with a mid-table finish of 6th, and after a positive summer and pre-season, we are raring to go and kick on again in 24/25.
Looking forward to the season ahead, manager Lou Cooper adds:
“Off the back of a good campaign last year, we want to do better and push on this season. We’ve retained our key players from last term, and also strengthened the group with some new signings as well, most of which have played and enjoyed success at the level above. We know on our day we can compete against anyone, and we cannot wait for the new season to get under way.”
Our journey and rapid rise on the field has also been documented on screen as well. We had the privilege of being named the first-ever women’s grassroots football team to take part in BBC Three’s Squad Goals series – ‘Dorking Til I Die’. The 6 part docu-series followed us throughout the 21/22 campaign, and after airing in October 2022, is still available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
Appointed as DWFC Women’s Chairman in 2021, Calum Best has led and overseen our progression throughout the recent seasons, as was instrumental in the ground-breaking documentary series coming to fruition:
“I see this series as an opportunity to show what grassroots women’s football is all about – the challenges, the highs and lows of a team and a club looking to create something special.”
